Many of us have been there. Our friend or family member fixes us up with someone in an arrangement relationship and we don’t hit it off them. Even worse; the person thinks you did hit it off and tells the one who set you up how nice you are and how much they like you. This might seem like an impossible situation, but it doesn’t have to be.
If you approach the situation in the right away; your friend will understand. After all, you have the right to make your own decisions. You just want to make sure you let the other person and your friend down lightly so you won’t come off looking like a jerk. You also don’t want to jeopardize your relationship with the person who fixed you up.
Don’t lead her on.
If you aren’t hitting it off with this person; don’t drag it out. It wouldn’t be good for either of you. If you are not interested, you need to start thinking of an exit strategy right away. Nothing that would suggest a romantic involvement should happen beyond this point. Never pacify them or lead them on while you think of what to do next.
Have a good reason.
You should have a good reason for not liking this person. Be open and honest about it. Lies will just make the situation worse. You don’t want to brush off a woman a friend fixed you up with without at least giving it a chance. Give it your best effort and if you still feel the same way, you need to tell both people involved.
Talk to both parties in person.
Once you have made your decision; talk to the woman and the one who fixed you up in person. It’s your decision which one you tell first. If you’re using an arrangement dating website then I suggest letting the website know. If it’s a personal friend then do it in person. Look each of them in the eye and tell them that you can’t continue the relationship. Have your good reason ready and make sure to let them down easily with some compassion.
Do right by her no matter what.
Regardless of what goes on between you and the person who fixed you up; do right by the girl you went out with. Don’t hide things from her. Don’t ignore her while you work things out with your friend. If you are not interested; let her know right away. Always be polite and sensitive to her feelings. That’s the best you can do.
